Arizona State coach declines to answer questions about workout that left a player hospitalized

GRAND FORKS — Arizona State head hockey coach Greg Powers repeatedly declined to answer questions Tuesday about defenseman Matthew Mayich's collapse during a team workout, leaving him hospitalized and on life support. Mayich is unlikely to recover, his family's lawyer said. Powers, speaking publicly for the first time since the Aug. 20 workout, addressed Mayich in his opening statement at National Collegiate Hockey Conference media day. "As you undoubtedly know, it's a very difficult time for everybody in our program," Powers said. "Matthew and his family are very much in our thoughts and our prayers and at the forefront of our minds as we try to prepare for a new season. Players and coaches and staff who work with the team are all affected by what has happened, and everybody is coping with this in different ways."
